The National @ House of Blues, Lake Buena Vista (10/6)

Touring in support of High Violet, the National came to Orlando last night, giving me the first thing to be excited about since moving to this place. I had been a casual fan since I heard “Mistaken for Strangers” back in the spring of ’07 and had always wanted to check them out. They could be described as brooding, especially with an album titled Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers but I always found something refreshing about them. Maybe it’s those gunshot snares, or those baritone vocals soaring with desperation on “Mr. November,” or perhaps it’s that chorus line on “Apartment Story,” repeating in my mind incessantly all year. Or maybe I just am all about Debbie Downer tunes. Whatever the case, they brought their live selves to the House of Blues, way out in that place lead singer Matt Berninger acknowledged as “a wonderful world” so I had to be there.
